At the small stream of Suseåen you find the remains of the old village of Appenæs. The village dates back to at least 1205. The village was small with just about 10 farms. The village is actually located right next to the castle of Gavnø which we have visited several times – but we never realized there was an old village next to the castle until we accidently went by on this day’s drive.

The village has a great location at the water where there were a lot of swans swimming around the area. The village is now a mix of old thatches roof houses and newer houses which have been built when the area’s population expanded.

It is a great little stop to make to see the old houses – there are around15 old houses making it a fairly large collection of this kind of old houses on a small area.

If you visit the castle of Gavnø it is well worth to stop by here for a little while on your way to or from the castle.
