One of the bigger towns at the lake of Vänern is the town of Mareistad. The city was founded in 1583 by Duke Charles who later became the king of Sweden. His wife was Marie of Pfalz so it is easy to see where he got the inspiration for the name of his new town.

The town has a nice location at the shore of Lake Vänern and there is a little harbor in the city where many locals have a boat so they can take advantage of the great lakes in the area. The city has a cathedral which is actually one of two cathedrals in Sweden which doesn’t have a resident bishop.

The cathedral is the most remarkable building in the town and surrounding the cathedral are a few small streets with old buildings and cobbled streets where you can go for a little wonder and explore the town. There isn’t a lot to see so you explorations will most likely be quick.
